Description
Dog Head Hammer, 2-2.2 LBS, Plane Old Iron Forge
Japanese style dog head hammer made by Plane Old Iron Forge in Newcastle, NSW. A joy to lift up and swing, you really feel how much power this head shape brings.
Used mostly in Japan, this hammer style has most of the weight in the front face, providing a heavier blow than the weight, compared to a "normal" hammer style. This is a specialist hammer for bladesmithing and not recommended as your first hammer - more of a specialist hammer for when looking into Japanese techniques and wanting the heavier blows this style brings.
Head weight is approx. 1.8, total weight with handle about 2-2.2 lbs (1 kg or so but each is individually made and might differ somewhat)
This is a medium weight forging hammer and really front-heavy with a comfortable, straight handle in Australian spotted gum and American Walnut wedge, with flattened sides for good indexing in use. The handle is finished with linseed oil for long life. The steel head is forged from 1045 carbon steel and the faces are polished.
The hammer is about 350 mm long with the hammer head being about 120 mm long. Note these are all individually made and will vary somewhat in exact measurements for the head and the exact handle but all are made by the same blacksmith and using the same materials.
This is a high-quality, Australian-made hammer and one that will last a life time - even though it might need a new handle before you hand it to your grand children!
