Description

French Forged 6" Chef Knife Kit

Make your own medium sized chef knife with this forged chef blade blank in French style.

The MG French Forged 150 blade blank is 2.8 mm thick, about 29 mm high at the heel and has about 150 mm of blade.

The blade is forged from a single Molybdenum/Vanadium Stainless Steel billet, meaning the bolster is integrated and a solid piece of the blade.

The blades are ground on German Berger grinders by hand. They will require some final sharpening before use.

The kit consists of

  • MG French Forged 6" Chef blade, 150 mm (4" blade also available, see options)
  • Curly Birch Scales, Super grade (See options)
  • Vulcanized fibre spacer material (red or black)
  • Optional: 2 Corby bolts in brass or steel (tang holes will need to be drilled slightly larger for these)

The chef knife kit can be completed with simple hand tools.

  • Epoxy the handle scales to the knife blade
  • Shape scales with belt sander, file or similar
  • Smooth scales with sand paper, minimum to 1200 grit
  • Optional: seal handle scales with oil, wax or similar
  • Optional: if using Corby Bolts, these need to be counter-sunk and attached, then filed down to the scales

Note: Unlike most of the blades we sell, the MG French Forged chef blades still require some final sharpening before use.

Example of this chef kit completed with Red Mallee burl scales and stainless steel pins:

French forged 6" chef knife kit

Posted by Dave on 30th Oct 2021

The perfect kit for a starter, relatively simple to complete yet containing a variety of processes. Can be done with relatively simple tools, being a drill, belt sander, files and sandpaper. Good solid blade, arrived quite sharp, there was however the tiniest delam on the spine of the blade near the tip but this was very easily fixed with the rough side of the stone that would be used to sharpen the knife further. Overall, very highly recommended kit, and a very useful knife too at the end of it.
