Description

Seax Blade Small, Carbon Steel

Hand made in Australia at Hillbilly Forge in NSW, these seax blades in Carbon Steel have a realistic, solid feel to them!

This is the smallest version, a belt or table knife more than an actual big functional seax/sword-knife.

Scandi grind and the characteristic broken back seax shape, with stick tang.

Made from 3,5 mm 1084 high carbon steel, with the characteristic seax shape highest at the "broken back" where the tip meets the spine.

These are hand made one by one and each blade is individually unique, but the rough measurements are blade length about 75 mm, height at highest point 16 mm and 14 mm where the tang starts. The blades have a rough and rustic finish with parts of the forge scale, scratches or other marks from being hand-made. They are sharp and ready for handle, or you can further sand and polish the blade if wanting a less rustic look.

This blade is modelled on the "broken back seax" mostly found in England and Ireland but some examples were also found in Germany, from the 800-1100 period. "Seax" in Old English meant "kn1fe", used across Europe and is the origin of the name for the people Saxons. The Seax was carried in a horisontal sheath on the belt, with the edge upwards.

Today the Seax is largely unknown outside of the re-enactors network and other students of early European history.
