Beautifully presented kit consisting of the tools and materials required to complete a spoon carving or woodcarving project, including instructions.

This kit is from Ukraine and comes with:

  • Spoon carving wood blank in basswood
  • Woodcarving knife with short, sharp blade and wooden handle
  • Spoon carving hook knife with rounded blade for the spoon bowl
  • cut-resistant tape for safer, more comfortable carving
  • Leather strop for keeping the tools sharp during carving
  • Sand paper to finish the spoon
  • Written instructions with pictures and easy-to-follow text

A "love spoon" was a sign of affection given by a young man to a young woman and recorded examples from Europe date back to the 1600s. The complexity of the design would showcase the young maker's skill and these are more an ornamental artpiece than the most useful eating spoon. This version makes a celtic-themed love spoon by attaching the pattern to the wooden block and carving along the lines.
