Description

Cross Peen Hammer, 2.2 LBS, Plane Old Iron Forge

Cross Peen Hammer in German style made by Plane Old Iron Forge in Newcastle, NSW.

The cross peen style is one of the most popular hammer shapes in blacksmithing. The flat face with rounded edges is for flattening and general forging work and the agressive peen is for drawing out material faster than with the flat face.

These are a good weight for knife making, heavy enough to really move metal but not heavy enough to wear out smiths not hammering every day.

The head weight is approx 1 kg or 2.2 LBS of 1045 carbon steel forged in Newcastle, NSW to a well-balanced head of about 110 x 45 x 40 mm with polished cross peen and flat face. The handle is in beautiful Spotted gum and with an American Walnut wedge, finished with linseed oil. The handle has a classical, functional shape with flattened sides for good indexing in the hand, even with gloves. Note, these are all individually made and will vary somewhat in exact measurements for the head and the exact handle but all are made by the same blacksmith and using the same materials.

This is a high-quality, Australian-made hammer and one that will last a life time - even though it might need a new handle before you hand it to your grandchildren!
