Description

Spoon carving axe

Good sized axe for finer work such as spoon carving and wood carving. Thin, sharp bit and comfortable handle in hickory.

Head is 1055 carbon steel, hardness 53-55 HRC with polished flats and poll.

Handle is hickory, flamed and sealed with tung oil for a comfortable grip.

Total length 315 mm, head 138 , edge 81 mm, total weight 750 gr.

Axe comes with handy sheath in veg tanned leather.

These are production axes, not hand made but made in small batches and are not "perfect" as in a production axe with perfectly straight sides.

    Sharp out of the box. Easy to maintain a good edge with regular stopping. Suitable for beginners. Comfortable handle but personally I would prefer a courser handle finish to give better grip security. Being a lighter axe head, it lacks punch when you need to remove stock from denser carving woods, ie., seasoned cherry. Greenwood axing is very controllable since the axe bites well into softer timbers like Silky oak, Grevillea robusta and other very green woods with less dense grain. If you want to do delicate axing, this axe will suit. A good beginners axe.
