How to Heat Treat AEB-L

Heat Treat Instructions for AEB-L Stainless Steel:

There are 2 versions, the first one is without Cryo treatment;

  • Heat to 1560 F(849 C) and let come to temperature for 5 mins
  • Ramp up to 1940 F (1060 C) and hold for 15 minutes
  • Quench in oil, between plates or even air cool
  • Temper at 300 F (149 C) for 60 HRC, 200 C for 58 HRC.
  • Temper time not listed but assuming a solid 2 hours x 2 cannot hurt

The above is from Alpha Knife Supply in the US, we have just converted the Fahrenheit to Celcius.

The more advanced heat treat recipe including Cryo for higher HRC:

  • Heat to 1560 F(849 C) and let come to temperature for 5 mins
  • Heat to 1975 F (1079 C) and hold for 15 minutes
  • Quench in oil, between plates or even air cool
  • Cryo: Cool to -95 F (-70 C) with no hold time, just cool down and move to tempering
  • Temper at 300 F (149 C) for 62 HRC, 400 F (200 C) for 60 HRC.
  • Temper time not listed but assuming a solid 2 hours x 2 cannot hurt
