Description

Camphor Laurel Knife Handle Scales

Handle scales are rough cut about 10 x 46 x 145mm in size

Camphor Laurel is originally from Asia and was introduced into Australia in the 1820 as an effective wind-break and against soil erosion due to shallow, large roots.

The camphor trees thrived to the extent they are now defined as a weed by the NSW Government and on the "WeedWise" list of species to remove where possible. It thrives easily and birds spread the seeds by eating the fruit, giving it an unfair advantage over many native Australian trees.

Camphor Laurel is a popular wood with woodworkers for everything from bench tops to wardrobes, cutting boards and smaller artifacts. The fresh smell of camphor when worked and some time after is a welcome change from some woods we have worked. Anyone walking in while we are cutting or working Camphor Laurel always grabs a piece and inhales deeply, it really is a distinct smell.

The heart wood varies in colour from light cream to dark brown, often within the same block for striking contrasts within the finished piece. The handle blocks we have selected, often display some fiddleback or 3D wavy patterns as well.
