Description

110-Layer Solid Stainless Damascus – X-Pattern

Pre-hardened solid stainless Damascus steel featuring a bold X-Pattern, made from approximately 110 forge-welded layers.

Made from 9Cr18MoV and 10Cr15CoMoV stainless steels, this billet is supplied fully hardened and tempered to approximately 58–60 HRC, making it ready for stock-removal knife making without additional heat treatment.

Unlike our San Mai Damascus range, this is a solid Damascus billet rather than a separate core with Damascus cladding. The layered construction runs throughout the billet, producing the distinctive X-pattern as the blade is ground, finished and etched.

Cut out your blade profile, grind the bevels, hand finish to your preferred grit and etch to bring out the contrast in the Damascus pattern.

Specifications:

  • Steel type: Stainless Damascus
  • Pattern: X-Pattern
  • Construction: Solid forge-welded Damascus billet
  • Steel composition: 9Cr18MoV / 10Cr15CoMoV
  • Layer count: Approx. 110 layers
  • Hardness: 58–60 HRC
  • Heat treatment: Pre-hardened and tempered
  • Recommended use: Stock removal knife making
  • Forging: Not recommended
  • Re-heat treating: Not recommended

Available in multiple billet sizes.

Because the steel is already hardened, drilling and machining will be more difficult than with annealed steel. Use suitable tooling and keep the billet cool during grinding to avoid affecting the temper.

Stainless Damascus can also require more experimentation when etching than carbon Damascus. Ferric chloride may work, while a stronger etchant may be required depending on the finish you want.

Pattern placement and appearance will vary slightly from billet to billet.
