VSM Ceramic belts: Long-lasting, hard-wearing belts with German ceramic abrasive particles for grinding steel. Benefits frolm being run at high speed, slowing down with these will dull the abrasive particles rather than tear new surfaces to keep grinding. A diamond belt dressing tool or grinding hard on a piece of steel often helps bring these back to life for a bit more grinding when they start to wear out. The VSM belts are made in China, these use imported German ceramic abrasive particles.
3M Cubitron II belts, these have largely replaced ceramic belts at Nordic Edge. The belt starter packs will be made up from what we have in stock at the time, either with ceramic or the newer cubitron belts. Both are good, even though our money is on the 3M Cubitron 767s.
VSM Zirconia belts: Less abrasive on the belt makes these clogg less than the ceramic belts when used on handle materials. Will last longer than the Ceramic belts, if used only for handle materials. These can be slowed down, this gives more control when shaping handles. A rubber sanding belt cleaner helps clear the belt of handle material -before it clogs too much - for long life. If not having a sanding belt cleaner, the corner of an old rubber shoe sole works well.
Aluminium Oxide belts: These are the brown belts that used to be the standard grinding belts, now surpassed by the Ceramic ones and Cubitron II for steel. The Alu Oxide belts are cheaper, goes to a higher grit and can be slowed down - but wear out much faster so don't use them to remove lots of material. These are used to refine the profile and bevels after the grinds are done. Also works well on handle material for the same purpose - refining scratches, not removing large amounts of material.
