Description

5-Layer Stainless San Mai Steel Billet – Pre-Hardened 58 HRC

Pre-hardened stainless San Mai billet for stock-removal knife making, supplied at approximately 58 HRC and ready to grind and finish.

The billet uses a 5-layer laminated construction, with a hard 10Cr15CoMoV stainless steel core, 316 stainless steel outer cladding, and thin pure nickel layers between the core and cladding.

Layer construction:

316 Stainless / Nickel / 10Cr15CoMoV Stainless Core / Nickel / 316 Stainless

The nickel layers create a distinct contrast line between the stainless cladding and core as the blade is ground, helping produce the characteristic San Mai appearance.

As the billet is supplied pre-hardened and tempered, it is designed for stock-removal knife making rather than forging. Shape the blade carefully while keeping the steel cool during grinding to avoid overheating and affecting the existing heat treatment.

Please Note

These billets are supplied pre-hardened. Use appropriate abrasives and keep the billet cool during grinding to avoid excessive heat build-up.

The final San Mai line and appearance will depend on the blade profile, bevel geometry, grinding depth and finishing process. Individual billets may vary slightly in surface finish and appearance.
