Hardened Damascus Steel billets, Ready to grind
Really liking the stainless steel damascus steel billets, starting to get some great shots of blades made with it. And getting good feedback from makers who are saying it grinds well and holds a good edge.
These are pre-hardened billets of stainless steel damascus, precision made using a Chinese version of VG10 as the core cutting edge and with softer stainless steels forge-welded to each side. This gives a strong, well perfoming blade edge which etches dark and the damascus sides etch in alternating dark/bright layers.
There are two patterns, ladder and "fireball" or random pattern and the patterns emerge when etching the ground blade in ferric chloride:
Here is a great example from Shane W showing the finished blade as well as the ground blade before etching;
These are already heat treated, ready for a blade design to be ground from the billets.
Be sure to keep the steel from heating up while grinding to not change the temper of the steel. Meaning it is very important to not let the steel get hot. A discolored tip on a pre-heat treated blade is no disaster while on these blades that would make the steel too soft.
