Description

This stainless san mai billet features an AUS-10 core with stainless damascus cladding, giving you a premium stainless cutting edge with a patterned finish once ground and etched.

AUS-10, also sold as CJ-A10, is a high-carbon stainless steel made by Sanwa Special Steel. Often compared with VG10 or 440C, it is a good choice for kitchen knives and other premium stainless blades.

Why use AUS-10 with stainless damascus cladding?

  • stainless core with good edge retention
  • damascus cladding for visual contrast after etching
  • suitable for stock removal knife making
  • great for chef knives and other fine stainless builds

Approx size: 3 x 50 x 600 mm
Approx weight: 750 g

Heat treatment:

  • Wrap in stainless steel foil to reduce carbon loss from the long hold time
  • Hold at 1060 C for 30 minutes
  • Quench in oil or between aluminium quench plates
  • Temper at 175 C for 2 hours, 2 times
  • Approx hardness after tempering: 60 HRC

AUS-10 / CJ-A10 is a high-carbon stainless steel with approximately 0.95 to 1.10% carbon and 13 to 14% chromium.

Please note: the stainless damascus pattern becomes visible after grinding and etching. Final contrast will vary depending on finish and etching process.

SAN MAI BILLET – AUS-10 STAINLESS CORE WITH STAINLESS DAMASCUS CLADDING – 3X50X600MM

Posted by Denis on 29th Jun 2026

My first San Mai so I've nothing to compare it to but it was relatively easy to work with and the finished product after etching was outstanding! A very nice pattern, a good edge and HRC 60+. Very pleased with this steel.
