Stainless Steel Heat Treatment Foil, 1200 C

Stainless steel foil or "tool wrap foil" is used to prevent oxidisation of the steel during heat treatment.

This results in a better blade by reducing carbon loss.

Considered a must if heat treating in an electric kiln due to extensive carbon loss, particularly stainless knife steels.

Plus the added benefit of WAY LESS SCALE - mostly the blade will be scaleless with only some colouring.

Sold by the meter: 0.05  x 300 x 1000 mm

• 310 stainless steel that can take 1200 C
• 0.05 MM thick, strong but still easy to fold (wear gloves though)
• 100 x 30 cm piece 

How to use:

• cut off a piece large enough to foil around the blade and fold each end TWICE.
• Hammer the folds down to help keep oxygen out.
• Place foil pack with knife blade in kiln, heat treat by dunking the entire parcel in oil or between quench plates.
• This is for stainless steel blades. Some use it also for carbon steel blades but there is some concern about the foil slowing down cooling rate too much. - we use it only for stainless steel blades.

Some place a small piece of paper in the pack to burn off any oxygen before the knife steel gets to heat treatment temperature, we tried this and found no difference so we do not do that anymore.
