3-Hour Blacksmithing Taster Workshop in Sydney
Try blacksmithing for yourself in this hands-on 3-hour workshop at Nordic Edge in Brookvale, on Sydney's Northern Beaches.
No previous blacksmithing experience is needed. You'll learn the basics of working with a forge, anvil, hammer and tongs before heating and shaping steel to make your own hand-forged bottle opener to take home.
This is a practical, beginner-friendly workshop with a maximum of 6 students, so you'll have plenty of guidance throughout the session.
What you'll do
- Start with a safety briefing and introduction to the forge, tools and basic blacksmithing techniques
- Heat steel in a gas forge and learn how to move and shape hot steel with a hammer and anvil
- Work together at different stages of the forging process
- Forge your own functional steel bottle opener
- Finish with a cold drink and put your new bottle opener to the test
What's included
All steel, tools and equipment are supplied, including hammers, tongs, anvils, gas forges, leather aprons, eye protection and hearing protection. You'll also have an instructor with you throughout the workshop.
Workshop time
1:00–4:00 pm
The session includes approximately 30 minutes for the safety briefing and process overview, around 2 hours of hands-on forging, followed by time at the end to finish up and try out your bottle opener.
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is suitable for beginners aged 16 years and over. No previous experience is required.
Blacksmithing does involve physical activity. You should be comfortable lifting and using approximately a 1 kg hammer for short periods. Don't worry if you need a break — we're there to help.
It's a great experience for individuals, couples and friends, as well as birthdays, team activities, bucks or hens groups.
What to wear
Please wear closed-toe shoes and full-length pants. Long sleeves are also recommended as sparks are a normal part of the forging process.
We provide leather blacksmithing aprons plus suitable eye and hearing protection.
