Working and Finishing
Hairy Oak generally machines, shapes and sands well, making it an attractive choice for knife makers. Its distinctive grain can occasionally cause tear-out when planing, so sharp tools and light cuts are recommended.
Sand progressively through finer grits to achieve a smooth surface. A suitable oil, wax or clear timber finish can enhance the rich colouring and highlight the striking grain patterns.
When attaching knife handles, prepare the bonding surfaces carefully and follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions.
Natural Timber Variation
Each block is unique. Natural variations in colour, grain, figure and small timber features are to be expected.
The photographs are representative of the timber supplied. The actual block received may differ in appearance.
Please note: Price is for one solid Hairy Oak block. Any photographs showing multiple blocks are for illustration purposes only.
Use suitable dust extraction, respiratory protection and eye protection when cutting or sanding timber.
