Description
Vegetable Tanned Leather for Sheaths – Natural Finish
This is the same high-quality vegetable tanned leather we use ourselves at Nordic Edge — ideal for knife sheaths, belt loops, pouches, and other leathercraft.
It’s tooling-grade leather, cut from the shoulder section of the hide, with a smooth grain, mostly clean flesh side, and consistent thickness. This leather can be carved, stamped, dyed, wet-moulded, and sewn — perfect for traditional leather projects. This is an organic, "real" product with some imperfections such as scratches, scars and marks.
Which Thickness Should You Choose?
- 2.0mm – Great for welts in thinner kitchen knife sheaths or for belt loops when you want a softer fold
- 3.0mm – The most common choice for knife sheaths and general leatherwork (approx. 2.8–3.2mm)
- 3.5mm – Firmer, heavier leather for belt sheaths or when extra structure is needed (approx. 3.2–3.6mm)
If unsure, we recommend starting with 3.0mm, the standard thickness most knife makers use.
Sizes Available (Sold Individually):
- 200 × 250mm – perfect for smaller knives or belt loops
- 300 × 600mm – large enough for 2 full-sized sheaths or 1 complete sheath and accessories
This is not half-tanned or chrome-tanned couch leather — it's proper tooling leather that stays pliable while forming and sewing. You can seal it, dye it, burnish the edges, and create clean, professional results.
Tip: For sheath making, fold the leather around the finished knife, glue with contact cement, punch or drill stitching holes, sew, trim, and dye. Belt loops can be sewn separately or cut into the design and folded behind the sheath.
