Description

Rhynowet Sheets: Metal workers abrasive paper (50 pack)

We used to say "whatever" when knife makers on Facebook raved about Rhynowet.

Until we tried them. Then we said "WOW!" as well. They just last longer.

When hand sanding or disc scanding, they do not wear out as fast as the cheap stuff which makes a big difference when it is your hands and your knife we are talking about..

If you are not sure, ask another maker for a sheet of rhynowet and compare it to the cheap stuff from a hardware store yourself. Don't take our word for it :)

Process:

  • Spray with windex and sand with Rhynowet wrapped around something hard like a bar of brass or G10. We divide a sheet in 3 and wrap a section around a handle block of G10, works great.
  • Some put masking tape on a steel or aluminium bar and spray glue it to the bar for less back and forth motion for even faster hand sanding.
  • Either way, change direction when changing grit. Meaning first grit where most of the work is, you sand up and down from tip to ricasso. back and forth, change paper when needed and go again. Spray with windex, wipe with kitchen paper and sand again. And again. And again.
  • Inspect closely in good light. When no more scratches, same grit in fresh paper and go ricasso to tip, lift paper and ricasso to tip again. Only sanding one way, starting further up the blade towards the handle than what will be visible.
  • Now when changing grit, you change angle. So first grit was up and down, now shift for instance 45 degrees left, sanding on this next grit will on this new angle. That way you know that if you lean in to inspect and see straight lines going towards the tip - those are scratches from the last grit you have not gotten rid of.
  • When happy on this next grit, you again go one direction, ricasso to tip before changing grit.
  • Next grit can be 45 degrees the other way, or just back to straight up and down again.
  • We normally do 180, 320, 600 for carbon and add 1000 and 1500 for stainless, while others prefer to go grit by grit, adding more grits in between. (No reason to go higher for stainless other than thinking it looks nice).
  • We do hard backing (the block of G10) until 320 grit, then do 320 grit again with soft backing, then all grits after that only with soft backing. Soft backing means a handle scale of G10 with veg tanned leather glued to each side for a bit of soft padding.
  • Key point is check for scratches before changing grit, end each grit with one direction pulls - and don't fool yourself thinking a scratch you have not removed with 180 grit paper will go away with finer grits..
