Description

Stainless Steel Damascus billet in ROSE pattern

Damascus or forge-welded steel billet from 2 stainless steels; 9Cr18Mov and 10Cr15CoMoV.

These are approx 58-60 HRC, fully hardened and tempered already.

Roughly 110 layers of stainless damascus - see Options for size and price.

Note: These need to be kept cool while working to not ruin the temper, like all other pre-heat treatment grinding.

These are difficult to drill, being hardened.

Being stainless steel, these can be difficult to etch and you may need to experiment before finding a good process.

Try Ferric Chloride, if this does not work try something more agressive like warm hydrochloric acid.

No heat treatment advice is provided as they are hardened already.

As for all stainless blade steel it is recommended not to heat treat more than once, and not to forge these.

    Stainless Damascus in rose pattern

Posted by Hayden kemp on 6th Sep 2025

I have made 6 knives using this steel and a couple with the ladder pattern stainless San mi and have been quite impressed I would have given 5 stars but my experience with other stainless Damascus products is limited. Overall I found it a bit tougher to grind and a good sharp belt is most important the cheap belts just don't like it but that doesn't surprise me being pre hardened. Also drilling is tough but sharpened good quality masonry bit did the job. I etched in sulfuric acid and while it took a while it etched quite well and I did go for a deep etch. I found the sulfuric worked well I did attempt to etch in ferric chloride but it just wasn't doing much. Can't tell you the exact concentration of sulfuric acid but it was a bottle from a battery specialist so whatever concentration that's used for car batteries worked quite well. Overall very happy with the results
