Blacksmith Brush for Forging Scale
For cleaner-looking forging results, use a blacksmith brush - or butcher block brush as they are also called - while forging.
While in the forge, the steel oxidises and a layer of scale is created on the outside of the steel. Rather than hammer this into the steel, brush it off with a blacksmith's brush.
These are just very stiff wire brushes, with thin strips of stainless steel rather than steel wire. This creates an agressive brush able to remove the forging scale from the hot steel.
This creates a much cleaner looking result than if leaving the forge scale on.
This step can be done quickly before hammering at every step, or more commonly done only on the last one or two heats while refining and straightening.
The blacksmith brushes have a solid wooden handle and the Nordic Edge logo burned into the brush surface.
Especially for pieces not being ground like hooks, bottle openers but also the spine of blades being left with forge scale on them, this improves the look of the final product.
