Description

Curly Birch Wood Knife Scales x 2 pieces (Super Grade)

Curly birch is a pale hardwood, growing only in a narrow, cold band north in Scandinavia and Russia.

The "curly" in curly birch describes the twisted, curled grains.

Curly birch has a solid texture and easy to work, the twisted grain strucuture does not mean it will crack or split easily.

Traditionally considered an exclusive material and used for knife handles and other "show" pieces.

Curly birch comes in 3 grades, based on the level of play and twists in the wood.

This is the "Super" grade, with lots of play and curls in the wood.

Each grade makes an amazing piece when sanded and sealed.

It is more a question of how figured you prefer the wood;

the Standard grade having more white birch and the Exctreme grade have more of the colored "curly" grains and imperfections that make the pieces unique.

 The set has 2 scales, each scale is about 8-10 mm x 40-45 mm x 120 mm in size.

    Curly Birch Super Grade Scales

    Posted by Dave on 30th Oct 2021

    The scales were not cut from the same block, with variation in feature and a slight difference in scale shape. This being said however, due to the highly featured nature of this timber, this variation did not negatively impact the final result. After finishing, these scales came up to be absolutely spectacular, couldn't stop looking at them, highly recommended.

    The Curly Birch was easy to work with and once sanded past 1200 and then varnished looked amazing and the made the grain really stand out.

    nice product

    Posted by Ksaw on 25th Jan 2018

    Everything was as advertised. Comes out a light honey colour and has a nice figure. I bought this as part of a kit which was perfect for a beginner. Maybe a touch over priced compared with other options but they delivered on service. The kit i bought had steel for two knives but just not quite enough timber for scales for two. That's down to my design though. I've cone back to the site to but more supplies so that says a lot
