Description
Damascus Fire Ant, 416 layers forge welded, Made in USA (75 mm blade)
This hidden tang design is called the "Fire Ant". It is a USA Made carbon steel damascus fixed blade that is hollow-ground and ready to build. This model will make a great mini-skinning knife project for the DIY builder of a nice presentation piece. It is well made and comes with a matching etched damascus guard.
With a blade length of 75 mm and an overall length of 117 mm, this is a quite small blade meant for delicate work where control is more important than force, or as a stunning presentation piece. The etched pattern is striking with exceptionally dark and contrasting layers of brighter steels. Note the size in the pictures, the blade is lying on two 20-cent coins.
The blade is hollow-ground and about 17.5 mm high, and comes with a matching damascus guard. The blade is made by forge welding 3 layers of 52100, 4 layers of 5160, 3 layers of 203E and 3 layers of 15N20 together, then folding and re-forging 5 times for a total of 416 layers. When the blade was etched after heat treatment, final grinding and polishing, the different steel alloys react differently to the etch. This is what creates the patterns, shinier steels with more chrome or nickel (like the 15N20) will show up as lighter, having etched less.
