Description
This Stabilised Curly Birch Handle Block – Extreme Grade is one of the most sought-after natural handle materials used in Scandinavian knife making.
Curly birch grows only in a cold, narrow band of northern Europe, and the material we stock is sourced from Finland, where it has been traditionally used for knife handles for generations. The name “curly” comes from the twisted grain structure, which creates dramatic waves, depth, and contrast — making every block visually unique.
At first glance, curly birch can appear pale and understated. However, once shaped and sanded to finer grits (around 1200 and above), the grain structure suddenly comes alive, revealing a striking three-dimensional figure that truly sets this wood apart.
These blocks are professionally resin-stabilised, making them highly resistant to water, oil, and general movement. Compared to natural curly birch, stabilised pieces have a slightly warmer, golden tone and offer far greater dimensional stability — ideal for high-use knife handles.
Each block measures approximately 120 × 40 × 30 mm, providing ample material for full-tang knife handles, tool handles, and other small fine woodworking projects.
