Stainless Damascus billet in Waves pattern, 3 x 50 x 330mm.

This pre-hardened stainless Damascus billet is made from two stainless steels, 9Cr18MoV and 10Cr15CoMoV, and is supplied already hardened and tempered to approximately 58–60 HRC. It features roughly 110 layers of all-hardened stainless Damascus, with no core layer like San Mai bars.

These billets are intended for stock removal knife making and can produce a striking finished blade once polished and etched. Because the billet is already hardened, it should be kept cool during grinding to avoid ruining the temper. Drilling can also be difficult due to the hardness. Re-heat treating and forging are not recommended.

Being stainless Damascus, etching can take some experimentation. Ferric chloride may work, but a more aggressive process may sometimes be required depending on your finish and method.
