W2 with hamon and burned ochre maple by Mefflin Knives
Pierre Mefflin from Mefflin Knives recently completed this amazing piece, and he was nice enough to share some progress photos of the handle;The blade is a fulltang dagger blade in W2 with a hamon and tapered tang. A hamon is a "failed heat treat" done so expertly that the edge is hard and the spine just missed the hardening, creating a visible hardening line. Heat treating 80CrV2: Recipe
Heat treating 80CrV280CrV2 is a popular blade steel in Finland, most all of the Lauri, Polar and Laurin and many of the Brisa carbon blades are made in just this steel. It is a steel similar to 1084 with the added Vanadium helping with refined grain size but unlike 1084 this is not a "real" oil-hardenable steel. Seax Knife by Chris B
Chris sent us some photos of this really nice Seax knife he has made with a blade from Hillbilly Forge, Bog Oak and Reindeer Antler.This blade is modelled on the "broken back seax" mostly found in England and Ireland but some examples were also found in Germany, from the 800-1100 period. "Seax" in Old English meant "knife", used across Europe and is the origin of the name for the people Saxons. How To Heat Treat: CPM S35VN
Heat treating S35VN can be done at different levels of complexity. The below is the "ultimate" version from knifsteelnerd.com:
hold at 2025 F for 15 mins (1107 C)plate quenchliquid nitrogen/cryo treatment for 30+ minstemper between 300 - 400 F for 2 hours x 2 (149 C - 204 C)(adjust temp for hardness, aim for 60 HRC as a starting point)A simpler heat treatment recipe that is proven to work but provide a slightly lower HRC:
