Description
Damascus Core Cu Mai Billets from Standen Knives
stunning damascus cored san mai billets made in Australia by Dane Standen.
- 27 layer carbon steel damascus core
- 15N20 layer
- Copper shim
- 1084 cladding
Note: These come as half bars at least 3 x 50 x 300 mm of usable steel or full bars in at least 3 x 50 x 600 mm, in reality they are larger.
The bars are actually measuring more like 3.1-3.8 x 58-60 x 610+ mm, we cut these in half for those wanting half billets.
Edges are ground clean on all long sides to ensure there are no delaminations.
These are high-end custom steel billets for advanced makers, there are no refunds for trying to forge them and melting the copper, or for delaminating them during heat treatment.
These require care when using, like grinding bevels on all edges before heat treatment to reduce the chance of any issues in the quench.
They do however make a stunning blade for those who can handle them!
Heat treat like 1084 carbon steel, then etch in ferric chloride and then coffee.
If you want the copper to pop even more... do another 1 hour tempering cycle after final etch at 150-200 C to make the copper change colour.
Except the copper shim, all steels are hardenable carbon knife steels. These look brilliant when finished and have the advantage of using steels that move in similar ways during the quench but still requires care and attention during heat treatment.
The full bars are approx:
Long 605-610 mm, weight about 1 kg
Wide 57-62 mm
3.1-4 mm
