Description
Instructions for Brisa Knife Making Kits with pre-milled scales
The kits come with
- blade sharp and ready to go
- handle scales that are rough ground to shape
- corby bolts for the handle
- Optional: Some kits come with spacer material, either loose or already attached to the inside of the handle scales
Tools required:
- Epoxy glue (2-component epoxy like Araldite, Loctite 5-min epoxy or similar from a hardware store)
- Kitchen paper and acetone for glue clean-up
- File and sandpaper
- Handle Finish, tung oil or wax to seal the handle (if wood)
Process:
- dry-fit everything up to make sure the bolts fit and you see what way everything goes
- glue the scales on with epoxy and add the bolts. Add some glue to the threads of the bolts too.
- Clean up any glue being squeezed out with kitchen paper and acetone
- If you get glue on the blade and do not get it off in time, scrape it off later with something soft like brass (not another steel knife that migth scratch this knife)
- When the epoxy glue is dry (next day), file the corby bolts down until they are flush with the handle.
- If you have screwed the corby bolts down under the surface of the scales, either leave them as-is, or file the handle scales down
- Optional: Shape the handle scales further with a file if you prefer a different shape to the handle.
- Sand the handle scales and bolt heads with sand paper, as fine as you can get your hands on (1000+ grit is a good aim)
- Seal the handle scales with handle finish, tung oil or even some wax if wood, to stop water absorption
