Description
Polar 95 Blade in Hammered finish
Carbon Steel blade, classic Scandinavian all-around blade shape.
Great, sharp blade for whittling, camp chores and general use that holds a sharp edge.
Blade is from Finland, made by Polar in 80 CrV2 carbon steel.
The blade is 3 mm thick, about 20 mm high and has about 95 mm of blade.
The blade has hammer marks, these come out better if removing the black coating.
For instance by soaking the blade in vinegar overnight (See image below)
Total length from tip to end of tang is 212 mm, the tang can be cut to fit the handle.
The Polar blades blanks are stamped out, helping to keep the cost down.
This means you will need to file the tang and shoulders of the blade a little before the bolster will fit.
As all carbon steel tools, the blade cannot be left wet to avoid rust.
Note: if wanting the matching bolster, get the R30.
Example of a Polar 95 blade with hammered finish, blade placed in vinegar overnight to remove black scale and then lightly sanded.
Knife by David Vered, handle in Australian Silky Oak with fibre and pewter spacers:

Versatile Tough design
Bought this with a brass bolster, excellent blade steel, did need a sharpen out of the box, but grind was even and consistent. Has a rough mill finish on spine, which is easy to grind flat or leave as is, if you wish to use the spine to strike on flint for fire starting. Thicker than Mora, and blade geometry gives you a long slender point as it is not a drop point. The longer thinner point and acute angled scandi grind is excellent for detail carving and gouging thin holes/slots in woodcarving, better than your standard Moras for this function. Easy to sharpen steel, 80CrV2 holds edge well, 1080 on steroids, chromium, vanadium and manganese traces make it that bit tougher. For the price, a good knife project, with a blade that is that little bit different to a Mora in a good way - not knocking Moras - love them, but this is an excellent blade to add to your collection. Hafted mine to a section of 40mm x 40mm Red Gum garden stake - nice.
