Description
Stabilised Curly Birch Knife Block
The most exquisite handle material from Scandinavia.
It only grows in a cold, narrow band of the world, we buy ours from Finland.
The "curly" name comes from the twisted grains, giving each piece it's unique look.
Curly birch is traditionally used in knife handles in Scandinavia due to the high level of contrast and play in the wood.
The wood is white or pale, with fine stable grains that can easily be worked.
It starts out looking not all that exciting but with grain waves and inclusions visible, then when finishing with fine sandpaper (1200 or more), the grains suddenly pop out!
These pieces are stabilised with resin, to make them impervious to water, oil or most other things.
The stabilized pieces are not as pale as the natural pieces, with a more golden sheen.

Curly birch block, extreme
Previously i have used this block with great results but on ordering another block it arrived with limited burl in the block. I returned it and bjorn sent me another to replace it, unfortunately it was really not much better. I ended up using a black walnut off cut i had to complete the project. It looks like nordic edge is a bit of a hit or miss affair.

Curly birch block, extreme
The holographic effect on finished handle is quite impressive, i used a clear polyurethane finish as it a working knife.i only use hand tools and found it an easy medium to work with. I normally make rifle stocks and wish i could get a piece of this wood big enough to make one out of.
